A native of Wisconsin, Clayton Staples graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago and State Normal University, Normal, Illinois. He served as Director of the art Department at the University of Wichita, Kansas.
Staples resided in Cuchara, Colorado for 11 years before he relocated permanently to Colorado Springs in 1961.
Born on a farm in Osceola, Wisconsin, Clayton Staples knew he wanted to be an artist even as a child. He went to Minneapolis, Minnesota to study art. When he was 19, he began working with the Chautauqua, traveling the country, speaking of his travels while drawing landscapes for his audiences.
After his work with the Chautauqua circuit, Staples went to Chicago to obtain a more formal art education in drawing and painting at the Art Institute of Chicago. He then moved to Illinois State University where he taught art.
